Run what you brung…
The Appalachian Journey is not a course designed for one bike. It’s actually a course that has terrain that would be great on different bikes! Some sections would be best on a fast road bike; on others you’ll find a full suspension mountain bike would be ideal.
The early Appalachian mountaineers didn’t have choices. They dealt with the terrain with whatever they had. And we encourage you to do the same.
That said, we do have a few recommendations…
Its a little bit of a secret but our premier event; The Appalachian Journey, was nearly called “The Appalachian Mountaineer.” This name captured so much of the independent spirit and path forging mentality of the mountains of Appalachia that we almost ran with it. The name though lacked the spirit of mutual enrichment, of partnership, and of saddling up together so that your experience is richer and deeper than a solo effort. It was a mentality we wanted to share, but it felt too narrow in its scope.
Racing in pairs magnifies your strengths but also multiplies your potential weaknesses. A good partnership is more than the sum of its parts, and we have some great guidelines for how to navigate the partnership. So with this in mind, we thought it might be a good idea to let our riders in on some "Do's and Don'ts" of partner/pairs racing. In addition to the best practices we will also outline the rules of The Appalachian Journey's partner format.

We are truly excited to be hosting The Journey at Chantilly Farm and are excited to showcase their unique hospitality all weekend. On race day, we will depart Chantilly and get right to gravel within just a few hundred feet.
It’s not often a new product comes along that solves a fundamental predicament for our riding lifestyle. When our friend and southern Appalachian ripper Brice Johnston dug into the parking lot predicament of changing pre and post ride, we were excited at the product he came up with.
The Appalachian Journey team loves a long ride. Unfortunately our skin doesn’t always. In our combined 40 years of riding bikes we have tried an awful lot of methods and magic balms to help alleviate skin irritation and chafing during those "Long Doggie" rides in Floyd Co and beyond. No product has had our backs more than Chamois Butt'r.
We are glad you asked! Our decision to run the first ever Appalachian Journey as a duo format event is influenced by a lot of factors. We think you'll understand and really dig the experience and thought that perhaps a little explanation of the choice was a good idea.
In our team's travels and experiences, one of the most common questions asked in preparation regards tires. Whether racing or riding The Journey, good preparation will ensure a great experience. Fitness aside, that preparation goes from the ground up! And so, in the first of our series on the right gear for The Journey we thought it prudent to cover tires.
